Piano Trios by Chausson, Dubois and Pfeiffer / Trio Arcadis

The Chausson Trio, Op. 3 that opens this program of three works for piano trio sets the aural palette for all of the music on the CD. It begins in a dark and dreamy, moonlit and magical sound-world that permeates the other two French romantic trios. These other two works are Georges Pfeiffer’s Trio Op. 103 and Theodore Dubois’ Promenade Sentimentale, from which the album takes it’s name.

While none of the works themselves will likely ever be considered landmarks in the repertoire, they are certainly very pleasant to listen to, and the youthful Trio Arcadis gives them the best possible advocation with superb performances. I was unfamiliar with both the record label and the ensemble before hearing this CD. Congratulations to Trio Arcadis for their excellent performances and choice of repertoire and to the Anima label for sound engineering standards.

On caveat however: the booklet notes lack relevant information and the typeface used is so small that it makes it a chore to even figure this out. Otherwise, this is an excellent release.
